PADI Advanced Open Water Course
Continue your dive education

Exploration, Excitement, Experiences.
They’re what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. And no, you don’t have to be “advanced” to take it – it’s designed so you can go straight into it after the PADI Open Water Diver course. The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water.
This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of your PADI instructor. Our Advanced Open Water course builds on what you have previously learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun scuba diving.
You’ll hone your skills by completing five adventure dives.

The Fun Part: Your Choice
One reason you’ll love the Advanced Open Water Diver course is that you and your instructor choose from 15 types of Adventure Dives to complete your course. You can try your hand at wreck diving, night diving, peak performance buoyancy and much more.

Prerequisites To take this course, you must be a PADI Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification from another training organization) and at least 15 years of age for the adult course, or you must be a PADI Junior Open Water Diver and aged between 12 and 14 for the Jnr AOW .

What You Learn The knowledge and skills you get in the Advanced Open Water Diver course vary with your interest and the adventures you have, but include: - Practical aspects of deep diving. - Physiological effects of deeper scuba diving. - More ways to use your underwater compass. - How to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time. - How to better use your dive computer and electronic Recreational Dive Planner. - And much, much more, depending on the Adventure Dives you choose.

The course consists of a self study portion prior to undertaking the dives, with knowledge reviews to be completed, then 5 qualification dives taken over a minimum of 2 days.
We usually do one days diving from shore consisting of two/three dives followed by a day spent on the boats at the coast carrying out the rest of the dives.
PADI require you to do 2 core dives and 3 elective dives of your choice. The 2 core dives have to be Navigation and Deep. The 3 elective dives can be chosen from the list in the PADI manual although from our experience we have found that the following works well for UK waters:

Shore Dives-
Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive-
This is a good dive to do first as it is a way to fine tune your buoyancy if you are fresh from the Open water course or if you haven’t been in the water for a while. You will definitely need good Buoyancy control to carry out the navigation dive.
Dry suit Dive-
Just brought a new dry suit? We can start to show you the ropes of how to use it properly and safely. Please note that if you have never used your dry suit before then you must take a dry suit orientation in the pool prior to the course. (Dry Suit orientations Cost £25).
Navigation-
This is a core dive so you have to do it, no excuses! The secret to mastering this one is to practice first. You will be required to navigate a square amongst other things underwater. It makes it so much easier to read the book, get a compass and practice in the back garden (when nobody is looking!).
Night Dive-
During the summer, night dives are great fun. In the winter they are not!
DPV Dive-
Whiz round underwater on an DPV (diver propulsion vehicle) Great fun, let the scooter do all the work!.
Boat Dives-
Deep dive-
The first dive of the day is always the deepest. We usually dive with Fathom and Blues in Portland for the second day of the course. We usually carry out the Deep dive at 18m+ on the Outer Breakwater Wall of Portland Harbour in the summer months and quarries in the winter. The dive is a taste of deeper dive strategy/conduct, and is another core dive. You will be asked to do timed tasks underwater to gauge the effects of Narcosis, always good for a laugh!.
Boat Dive-
Speaks for itself.
Wreck Dive-
Fingers crossed for good conditions because Portland Harbour has some truly excellent wreck dives for us to explore, the Countess Of Erne being our firm favourite for this course.
Drift Dive-
A great way to round off the weekend. Bombing along the side of Portland underwater at a rate of knots whilst hardly having to kick at all.
